Challenge
For Deliverr’s Design Assessment, I was challenged to create a web or mobile app that allows the user to keep track of their investment portfolio’s performance, gains and losses. I was asked to focus on the visual, information and interaction design.
Overview
TUJA (pronounced “too-jah”) is a mobile application for users to keep track of their investments. It updates daily and represents accurate data on the user's investment portfolio, showcasing their gains and losses.
Fun fact: TUJA is a Korean word for invest!
People Problem Statement
As a full-time designer with a 401(k) and a few investments, it's difficult to keep track of all my accounts and see how they're performing. It's time consuming to log into each account and manually track my numbers which can be frustrating and difficult.
Solutions
Connect all investment accounts into one place
Have an easy breakdown of investments to understand the gains and losses
Include clear navigation and information hierarchy in the main dashboard and detail view
Competitive Analysis
I started by making an account with Coinbase, Acorn, Robinhood, Wealthfront and Apple Stocks and going through each product to get an understanding of what information I want to highlight in TUJA.
Low Fidelity Design
I used Sketch to go broad and wireframe a flow for TUJA. I explored different iterations of the dashboard, profile and log in experience. I went through the different interactions and made sure I had solid design rationale for each feature.
High Fidelity Design
Total Value
The user can see the total value of their investments with the 3 connected accounts pinned to the top. The main dashboard also gives you an update on other stock options and gives users a way to search for other stock. The user can click into any of their connected accounts like Fidelity NetBenefits to show a more detailed view of their 401(k).
Unrealized Gain
The user can see the detail view of their Facebook stock with all the information they need. The Facebook stock shows the unrealized gain from the latest update and won’t show the next change until the next day.
Unrealized Loss
Just like the Facebook stock, the user can access a detailed view of their Inuit stock. In order to successfully understand their stocks, they are given all the information they would need. Since the latest update, the Intuit stock shows the unrealized loss.
Profile
For security purposes, the user will have to create an account with TUJA and log into each investment account to show personalized data in their dashboard. This can be a friction point for users but necessary and important when dealing with a user's Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
Takeaways
Going into this design assessment, I already knew that it was going to be challenging. I learned a lot about financial tech through all the research I had to do. I also bought 1 share of Twitter stock to see what it meant to own a share. I quickly learned that most people have way more than 1 share (whoops!) and had to make some revisions on my design. Some future steps for TUJA:
Being able to add other financial accounts to your TUJA account
Doing more research about financial tech to add more useful tools
Taking out the 401k to allow TUJA to focus more on stocks and other investments
Finding an engineer to build and launch this app
