Challenge

For ViFive’s Design Challenge, I was challenged to design two interfaces (patient and clinician) that implemented features such as instructional videos, body tracking, posture correcting, alarm/notification, and metric collection mechanisms.

Overview

Vibrant is a mobile application that helps the patients go through their daily strengthening exercises with instructional videos, body tracking and posture correction.

Problem Statement

Patient

Steve is a 30 year old who’s been suffering from chronic knee pain. He wants to visit Dr. Bob more often to be treated for his chronic knee pain, but because of quarantine, he can’t go into the office. Steve wants a product that'll keep him connected to Dr. Bob to learn strengthening exercises to help with his chronic knee pain.

Clinician

Dr. Bob is a 35 year old physical therapist with over 5 years of experience. He recently started working with Steve for his chronic knee pain, but because of quarantine, he can’t schedule regular appointments with him. Dr. Bob wants a product that’ll track Steve’s progress and improvements based on the strengthening exercises that he plans out.

Competitive Analysis

ViFive provided reference links to see what the common features were already out in the world. I started this competitive analysis by looking over all the links and figuring out the opportunities for Vibrant.

kaia health

  • digital personal trainer or physical therapist

  • analyzes your body, offers real-time instructions and feedback

zenia

  • AI virtual yoga assistant

  • corrects your posture features (green and red dots)

Physmodo

  • detects and screens automatically

  • used in health clubs, gyms, corporate wellness and clinical

Tempo

  • real-time workout with trainers who can see your progress

  • corrects your posture by telling you what you’re doing wrong

Wireframes

I started my wireframes by roughly sketching out my design idea with a pencil and paper. Before working on the details for this design challenge, I wanted to create a flow that my users will approve.

Initial Design

After working on my wireframes, I moved onto using Sketch to go broad and wireframe a flow for Vibrant.

Strengthening Exercise

Some users tend to forget how to do the exercise after their physical therapy session. The users are given a video (which is optional) to watch before starting their exercise. The user has to align their bodies with the star-man for Vibrant to track the user’s body. Vibrant will inform the user on how they’re doing. In between sets, the users will be given a short break and some encouragements such as an elbow-five to help them finish their exercise.

Calendar

The users are encouraged to use the calendar to keep track of their appointments and daily exercise. It’ll be a great reminder of whether or not they’ve done their exercise for the day.

Profile

The user will have a personalized profile that updates with their diagnosis, exercise plan and any feedback from the physical therapist. Some users need helpful reminders on their upcoming calendar events and doing their daily exercises. The users will have an option to set these alerts/notifications to be successful at completing the tasks.

Clinician

Home

The clinician has a list of all their patient’s profiles to look over and watch their exercise progress. That allows the clinician to see if their exercise plans are good or need some revision depending on the patient’s progress.

Calendar

The calendar will keep the clinicians schedule organized and updated that way the clinician won’t miss any appointment with their patients. Also, the clinician can block off time to review the patients’s profiles and update any exercise plans that they would need to.

Profile

The clinicians will have personalized profiles to show their capability as a clinician. The clinician has an option to set alerts/notifications for their calendar and progress updates from their patients. This will help the clinician to not miss any patient appointments and oversee the patient’s progress.

Patient & Clinician

Notification

The patient will be notified when the clinician gives any feedback on the exercise that they’ve sent over. The clinician will be notified when the patient sends over their exercise for the day to be looked over. If reminders are needed, both users can be set up alerts through their profiles.

Takeaways

I’ve always been interested in the health industry and being able to design for it was surreal. So taking on this design challenge, I knew I was going to thoroughly enjoy this challenge. It was very hard because I’ve never personally had physical therapy so there were a lot of questions I had. How many times a week do people typically go to physical therapy? How long are physical therapy sessions? How are the exercises done? Do you get breaks in between exercise sets? Do you have to do the exercises at home? How many hours do physical therapists typically work? Some of the questions that I have are still being answered through my research (google search and talking to people in my network). Some future steps for Vibrant:

  1. Giving the clinician an opportunity to record their own exercise video for their patients

  2. Doing more in-depth research with physical therapists to understand what kind of metrics needs to be collected about their patients

  3. A way of communication between the patient and clinician
